Born in Uganda, Dolar Vasani’s family were expelled in 1972 by President Idi Amin and resettled in the United Kingdom. She holds a BSc from Bangor and an MBA from Hull, and began her career in public service in London, focussing on community development and access to services for ethnic minorities.
With over 30 years in international development, Dolar has worked with the United Nations, VSO, and Oxfam, leading major HIV and AIDS initiatives across Southern Africa. She also founded Positive Art, an NGO using creative expression to challenge stigma and raise awareness.
Since 2010, she has worked as an independent consultant supporting NGOs, particularly in the gender and SOGIE space, with a focus on participatory processes, organisational development, and coaching.
Dolar’s writing has been published in a range of international publications. Her book Not Yet Uhuru explores lesbian relationships across cultures, and her podcast Expulsion@50 documents oral histories of the Ugandan Asian expulsion.
She divides her time between South Africa and the United Kingdom.
